The Basics of Depression: Symptoms and Diagnosis

    Understanding the Symptoms of Depression

Depression manifests in diverse ways, affecting different aspects of a person's being: emotional, physical, and cognitive.

    Emotional Symptoms

The most recognizable symptom of depression is a deep, persistent feeling of sadness or a marked loss of interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities. This emotional state is often accompanied by:

    • A sense of emptiness or hopelessness
    • Excessive guilt or feelings of worthlessness
    • Irritability or frustration, even over small matters
    • Suicidal thoughts or recurrent thoughts of death

    Physical Symptoms

Depression is not just a mental condition; it also has physical manifestations. These can include:

    • Significant changes in appetite and weight (either loss or gain)
    • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or hypersomnia
    • Physical agitation or retardation noticeable by others
    • Persistent fatigue or loss of energy
    • Unexplained physical symptoms, such as aches, pains, headaches, or digestive issues

    Cognitive Symptoms

Depression can impair cognitive functions, leading to:

    • Difficulty in concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
    • Slowed thinking or speech (observable by others)
    • Inability to perform routine tasks
    • Decreased ability to think or concentrate
